High-frequency ambient noise in warm shallow waters

چکیده
In deep water, the dominant sources of natural ocean noise are often events occurring at the sea/air interface. In shallow water, particularly if it is warm, this is often no longer the case. Where wind-related noise is less pronounced, snapping shrimp alone can easily dominate the soundscape over two decades of bandwidth. Particularly for ambient noise imaging, the high frequency content of these sources (up to at least 250 kHz) provides good angular resolution, at the cost of short range due to absorption. Despite the central role that these animals can play in shallow-water ambient noise, very little is known about their spatial and temporal ensemble acoustic behaviour. Some data collected in Singapore and elsewhere are presented, and the temporal statistics discussed. It is found that some features of ensemble snapping shrimp noise appear to be quite robust, suggesting that knowledge of these properties can be used to improve algorithms for ambient noise oceanography. Two physical models are proposed which are consistent with our acoustic observations.

Ambient noise imaging in warm shallow waters; robust statistical algorithms and range estimation.
The high frequency ambient noise in warm shallow waters is dominated by snapping shrimp. The loud snapping noises they produce are impulsive and broadband. As the noise propagates through the water, it interacts with the seabed, sea surface, and submerged objects. An array of acoustic pressure sensors can produce images of the submerged objects using this noise as the source of acoustic "illumi...

Snapping shrimp dominate ambient noise over 2–300 kHz in warm shallow water. To investigate spatial & temporal behaviour, a stochastic tomographic inversion experiment & signal-processing algorithm have been designed. The experiment uses a set of directional hydrophones with parabolic acoustic mirrors steered in azimuth and elevation by onboard microprocessor systems with pitch and heading sens...

Detection of a known signal in presence of noise is a common requirement in many applications including sonar, ranging, environmental sensing and communications. The optimal detection of signals in noise requires detailed knowledge of the noise statistics. The linear correlator, commonly used in the form of a matched filter, is known to be optimal in the presence of Gaussian noise. However, the...

The natural soundscape in Singapore waters is dominated by shipping below 1 kHz and snapping shrimp above 2 kHz. Reclamation noise contributes to 300 Hz 3 kHz. The shrimp noise is expected in all warm and shallow waters, except with very high winds or heavy precipitation. The shrimp noise power is not Gaussian, as might be expected from a collection of independent sources, but log-Normally dist...
متن کاملA high-frequency warm shallow water acoustic communications channel model and measurements.
Underwater acoustic communication is a core enabling technology with applications in ocean monitoring using remote sensors and autonomous underwater vehicles. One of the more challenging underwater acoustic communication channels is the medium-range very shallow warm-water channel, common in tropical coastal regions. This channel exhibits two key features-extensive time-varying multipath and hi...
